The Retreat at Ponte Vedra Beach was established by a family psychiatric group that understands the importance of healthy relationships, as well as the role they play in our individual qualities of life. Our vision is to establish a primary prevention model for mental health and wellness that delivers child-centered, family-informed care for residents of Northeast Florida.

Theresa Randazzo-Burton, MD

Dr. Burton is a Board-Certified Adult, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with training and experience in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, and Play Therapy. She is also an expert in combination mental health treatment when medication and psychotherapy is used simultaneously to treat your or your child’s diagnosis. Dr. Burton attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston before entering a residency and fellowship at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. The last ten years have been spent treating children in a hospital setting including Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC and most recently Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville. Though Dr. Burton has a passion for emergency and acute psychiatric care, she felt led to bring services to her community focusing on prevention and wellness.

Elizabeth Winings, DNP, APRN, PMHNP

Dr. Elizabeth Winings is ANCC Board Certified as a Family Mental Health-Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. She completed her undergraduate and graduate education in Nursing at the University of Florida. She is also certified in Plant-Based nutrition through Cornell University and completed her doctoral internship in nutrition and lifestyle medicine at the True North Health Center in Santa Rosa, CA. Dr. Winings practices psychotherapy in conjunction with psychopharmacology and wellness focused interventions. She has advanced training in plant-based nutrition and wellness promotion and specializes in the relationship between diet, lifestyle, and mental health.

Her time working as a surgical nurse and an emergency department nurse inspired her pursuit of advanced training in mental health and plant based nutrition. Working with children and families, Dr. Winings practices with the understanding that achieving optimal health is multi-factorial, composed of physical, mental, and emotional experiences.

JoEllen Suslak, BSEd, Ed Kinesiology

JoEllen Suslak is an accomplished Educator, Consultant, Developer and Presenter of current Brain Research, Brain Based Curriculum and Program for children in kindergarten through adults. Her 28 years of experience brings depth of knowledge in education, business, and community relationships to her role of Director of Education and Development at The Retreat at Ponte Vedra Beach.

She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Education at Florida State University. JoEllen’s passion for teaching and respect for the unique individuality of every child, led her to continue her education in Neurological, Biological, and Psychological studies. She went on to complete graduate studies through Southern California University and certifications in Educational Kinesiology, Psychology, Neuroscience, and Pedagogy through classes and seminars in Boston and Salt Lake City.

In addition to her educational experiences she is a successful Licensed Realtor through the University of Miami and spent a portion of her career investing in and developing a real estate business alongside her husband and family. She brings with her experience in management, sales, and public relations.

JoEllen’s education and engagement in the mental, physical, emotional and social well-being of children and adults influenced her to develop Academic Wellness centers for schools and communities. She became a Co-Founder, director, and instructor of academic, nutrition, dance and exercise businesses for children ages 10 through geriatric. She offered individualized, small and large group classes to help each participant reach their goals. Her focus on collaborative learning that engages students, staff, families, and the community contributed to her successful endeavor to develop her own businesses.

As the The Retreat PVB Educational Developer and Director, she brings with her a teaching philosophy centered on Educational Neuroscience, along with interactions between biological processes and teaching. She is dedicated to bridging the achievement gap which will allow children to reach their full potential with confidence and a healthy self-esteem.

JoEllen is a gifted educator, business women, and leader in our community. She has conducted interactive Seminars and Workshops for schools, parents, home schools, and corporate team building. Her presentations are on “The Total Child,” with transferring of information to application. The list of requested topics are extensive. See the list of requested topics below.

In her free time you can find JoEllen and her husband enjoying time with their family grilling out together or going to the beach. She is also an active tennis player and cyclist.

Kristen Lancaster, MSEd

Kristen Lancaster is thrilled to be part of The Retreat PVB family. She comes to us from North Carolina. She moved with her husband and three children to the Ponte Vedra Beach area in 2016. As a graduate of the College of Charleston, Ms. Lancaster earned her degree in special education. She furthered her study of exceptional students receiving a Masters of Education from UNC-G.

Ms. Lancaster is a passionate educator with specific interest in supporting the whole child. Her enthusiasm is evident as she coaches students and interacts with families. She has worked with students of varying ages for many years and has extensive experience teaching individually as well as in the classroom. Among other endeavors, she taught study skills to middle school students and served as the Learning Specialist for a middle school. She brings her knowledge and varied experiences with her to The Retreat at PVB, creating individualized programs geared to meet each student’s unique needs.

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and growing boys. She also loves playing tennis when time allows.

Kim Shuman-Herrington, B.A. Psychology

Kim Shuman-Herrington obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of North Florida, and is continuing her education by pursuing her Master’s degree in Education. She will have her degree completed in July 2020.  Ms. Shuman is currently a certified teacher at Terry Parker High School. She has been a classroom teacher since 2007, and has worked with grades K-12. She has been a teacher, tutor, taught ELA, Reading Interventionist, and currently an AVID Site Coordinator for Terry Parker. She has her certification in K-6th grade Early Education, an ESOL Endorsement with over 300 hours of training, and a 6th-12th grade ELA certification.  She has also taken on a new role as a Professor for Edward Waters College teaching a Dual Enrollment class, Intro to College 1103, to the students at TPHS.  Her role as the AVID Site Coordinator, prepares her students for post-secondary success. She ensures they learn study skills, helps prepare their college essays, completes the FAFSA process, complete college applications, college educational resumes, helps the students obtain scholarships, ensures they meet Bright Future requirements, PERT testing preparation, and any other post-secondary requirements needed.  She works not only with the student, but also the family as they transition into the next phase of college life. She has the experience as a teacher, and a proud mother of a Senior in College, and understands the process and transition.

In her spare time you can find her enjoying time with her family.  Her favorite way of relaxing is spending time poolside, or one of our beautiful local beaches.

Madison Tormey, B.S. Nutrition

Madison Tormey is certified instructor of Vinyasa, Hatha and Yin Yoga. She also has her CrossFit Level 1 Trainer Certification, which allows her to teach both individual and group functional fitness classes. Madison studied at Stetson University in Deland, Florida where she received a Bachelor of Science in Integrative Health Sciences. Madison played 4 years of Division I Beach Volleyball at nationally ranked, Stetson University.

Today, she attends University of North Florida, pursuing a second Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics. Soon she will complete clinical training to receive her license as a Registered Dietitian. Her passion is preventative medicine, through the integration of contemporary and alternative techniques. Madison’s strong background in fitness and wellness has inspired her to lead others to optimal health and functioning through everyday choices like exercise and nutrition.

Olivia Beech, B.S.N.

Olivia Beech is thrilled to be joining The Retreat at Ponte Vedra Beach as an office administrator. Olivia was born and raised in Ponte Vedra Beach, where she attended and graduated from Ponte Vedra High School in 2014. She is currently attending Jacksonville University, where she will graduate with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing in the Spring of 2019. During her time at JU, Olivia’s favorite clinical experiences have been in her pediatric and psychiatric clinical rotations. This is where she discovered her passion for working with children in the clinical setting. Olivia is excited to be apart of the team and hopes to make a positive impact on the community through the RPVB.
